Engineer's Day
Day long event where high school students are invited to campus and learn about University of Tennessee’s College of Engineering. Activities vary with organization. IEEE provides departmental tours where students are taken around to various labs for short demonstrations. Students are given an overview of the different fields within Electrical Engineering and Computer Science. Engineer’s Day is usually held around the same time as E-Week in the Fall Semester.
Career Night
This is an evening where companies and students join together…. There is a question and answer session where students can ask a panel of employers questions from "what they look for" to "what to do next". Also, there is a resume critic table where students can bring their resumes in to be reviewed and improved. Finally, there are individual mock-interviews given by employers. The students then get feedback on how they interview and given advice on how to improve their interviewing skills. Corporate volunteers in the past include Motorola, AMS Corp, Shaw Industries, SPX Corporation, M Force Staffing, Alstom Power, ALCOA, TVA and etc.
Study Night
Open to all undergraduate students, study nights are an opportunity for underclassmen to get help from seniors and graduate students with their homework. Most involvement comes from the EECS 300 Circuits course. The event is scheduled before exams to help students study and get a full understanding of their course work.
IEEE Advisory Board
The IEEE Advisory board serves as a venue for Electrical Engineering and Computer Science students to voice their opinions regarding the undergraduate curriculum. An open forum will be held once a month amongst students to discuss any concerns regarding any courses, labs, facilities and etc. Then, student representatives will participate in bi-monthly meetings with the department head to discuss any issues.
Cookouts
Cookouts are a social event for IEEE held by the students for the students, faculty, and staff. Cookouts usually are held once a month or more if weather provides. Burgers, hotdogs, chips, cookies, etc. are served and students get a chance to network with their peers and professors. This is a great activity where undergraduates to become award of IEEE and become interested in joining the organization.
Technical Lectures
IEEE tries to have one technical lecture a month for the students in the EECS department. A speaker will present his/her research, profession, or company to the students. This is a great opportunity for companies to network with the students in a more informal manor. Refreshments are provided for attendees. There has been a large amount of positive feedback from students attending these lectures. Past presentations: Navy, LexMark, National Instruments, Eastman Chemical, Eaton Corporation, Texas Instruments, Southwest Research Institute and etc.
General Body Meetings
These meetings are very important for our student members. In the general body meetings upcoming events are announced. Also, officer elections are held and activities chairs are assigned. This is a time for the students to voice their opinions about the department, classes, and IEEE events. General Body meetings are held once a month.
Professional Meetings
Professional meetings are an opportunity for the student section and the East Tennessee Section to join together for a technical presentation and dinner. Both the University of Tennessee and Pellissippi State Technical Community College student chapters attend these meetings.
Special Projects/Community Service
Each year, UT-IEEE participates in engineering-related projects which benefit the university and is surrounding community. In 2007, UT-IEEE collaborated with former Knox county mayor Dwight Kessel, the East Tennessee Historical Society, American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) to restore the 1982 World's Fair Rubiks cube for its 25th Anniversary. Other activities include volunteering at the Tennessee Science Bowl Competition and caroling during the Christmas holidays.
